I admire kerry Needham for applauding police-efforts when she must be going through absolute turmoil at simply not knowing what these investigations might reveal ....

Kerry and her family must be feeling all kinds of emotions now, is Ben dead or not? At least if he had been found their torment would have ended, now they are in limbo, my heart really goes out to them :s_sad

They seem to accept the likelihood that Ben died after a tragic accident. It's so sad Kerry and her family have suffered all this time not knowing when all along this person knew what had happened to Ben.

Police investigating the disappearance of Ben Needham believe the toddler died in an accident near a farmhouse in the Greek island of Kos.

Police gave their briefing after a three-week dig for clues on the island, where Ben was last seen on 24 July 1991.

"It is my professional belief that Ben Needham died as a result of an accident near to the farmhouse in Iraklis where he was last seen playing," said South Yorkshire Police Detective Inspector Jon Cousins.

He said police had discovered an item believed to have been in Ben's possession at the time of his disappearance.

The item, which was not identified, was shown to some of Ben's family.

I still can't get my head around why :s_dunno

The man was probably scared he would be prosecuted. Hence waiting for him to sadly pass away and then have someone who knew, come forward.

"My mum obviously broke down, they do vaguely remember a toy car but what I can’t stress enough is my nan is only 90per cent sure that it is one that is similar to the one that Ben had. We can’t say for definite that it is Ben’s toy car."

It does bother me that the Police are so sure it is Ben's.

And...... Did he actually have it with him that day? Had Ben been to the property before with his grandparents? He could easily have left it another day.... :s_dunno

I lost count of how many small cars that my sons have left buried in dust or beaches.

ETA: Ah seems the Mirror article answers my query..."A little yellow car Ben was almost certainly playing with on the day he vanished in Kos was discovered among the dust and dirt."

I seem to recall something a couple of years ago about them findin something that could have been a toy car.

This is awful and it's worse that the family were certain he was alive and now have to deal with knowing he died all those years ago. I remember her talking about meeting and talking with a man they all thought was Ben only for DNa testing to say otherwise. Before DNS testing he probably would have been accepted as her son and a part of me wonders if that would have been better in a way. A lost young man finds a family and a mother finds her son.

As for the driver listening to the police rather than the papers spin it doesn't sound as if they do think there was a cover up. They have looked in places he dumped rubble which is where Ben would have ended up if he was accidently taken with the rubble, but they have not been searching places like his garden or house so it doesn't look like they think he hid him intentionally. Also why when it was an accident. He was on a building site it really wouldn't have been his fault if a child that age got on site and he would not have had much chance to see him. I know a witness said he was upset after being interviewed but who wouldn't be upset to think they might have accidently killed a child.

So the reputation of the man must be upheld, yet he has been implicated in the death of Ben. And if Kerry had made that comment in the UK, it would have been seen as freedom of expression.

Well I can see why the drivers family are upset too. If a year after someone I loved died early and from cancer, someone accused them of covering up a child's death and said they wanted them to burn in hell I would be distraught.

If one actually looks at what the police have said and done, rather than the media and needhams, it doesn't look like police think there was a cover up. They have looked in places Ben would have ended up accidentally, they have not investigated the driver by looking in his home etc. I know he was supposed to have said he could have killed him, but given the context it sounds more like he was worried or frightened that could have happened. I do think it is most likely he killed him, but accidentally and without ever knowing. He was up high, dust everywhere and he would not have been looking out for a toddler. Any worries he may have had when Ben was found missing would have been pushed aside by the fact nothing was found to indicate Ben died and the abduction theory was put forward. The car was found at the original site a couple of years ago I believe not at the new site.

It sounds to me like Kerry thinks that because Ben himself has not been physically found it means he has been hidden somewhere by a third party. But I don't think that is the case and given she says police have said it's time to stop searching I don't think they do either.

So I can understand why the drivers family are so upset, but I also understand Kerry has been searching for twenty five years and has now had all hope destroyed. She needs time, and compassion. I hope the family can come to understand that this is a grieving mother who is going through every emotion possible and that the media should perhaps have backed away from reporting what she said given her fragile state

Actually the car was found this time around on the second sure, but I am certain I read about toy cars being found a couple of years ago. However I still don't think that imply a cover up as rubble was being moved around and a child could easily have been picked up with the rubble.

I also think that if the driver had realised he had hit him at the time he would have shouted or cried out and the family and others could have heard.

It's just so awful that he was happily playing and got killed so awfully, I hope it was quick and he did not suffer. That he has been there so close for so long is horrible, so many years looking all over the world and he is just yards away.

I just do not understand why the building area was not checked straight away as firstly you want to make sure he was not there and in danger and secondly when he was missing surely it was an obvious explanation. I just cannot believe not so much as a speck of blood would have been found after such a fatal accident if there had been a proper toothcomb search. Why wasn't the digger examined at the time? Twenty five years to find a missing toddler was killed on the building site yards from where he played!
