Yet there are still some gullible or (more likely and more numerous) malevolent people who continue to accuse the McCanns.

However, it must be stated any such indications without any physical evidence to support them can not have any evidential value, being unconfirmed indications. Additionally I consider no inference can be drawn as to whether a human cadaver has previously been in any location without other supporting physical evidence.

This is chilling, of course, and we must hope Mark Harrison is wrong.

But it does confirm two things. Mark Harrison dismissed all dog reactions in the investigation.

And if he is right, then Madeleine was, indeed, murdered and murder (alone) is what Mark Harrison investigated:

I am currently of the opinion on the available information and statistical datasets that if death has occurred, that it is possible that Madeleine McCann’s body has been disposed into the sea at Praia da Luz. (See my second report entitled “NPIA OP TASK Search Doc Beach and Marine”).

Against stiff competition, this, surely, is the most libellous passage from The Book of Many Lies:

After a week of intense work, Harrison presents the results of his study to my coordinating group. Even if we were expecting it, his conclusions confirm our worst fears. The most plausible scenario is the following: there is no doubt that Madeleine is dead, and her body is hidden somewhere in the area around Praia da Luz. He praises the quality of the work carried out by the Portuguese authorities in trying to find the little girl alive. According to him, the time has come to redirect the searches in order to find, this time, a body hidden in the surrounding area.

AMAZING STATISTICS

Great Britain has at its disposal the world's biggest data bank on homicide of children under five years old. Since 1960, the count is 1528. Harrison is well acquainted with its contents. He often draws information from there which helps him to resolve similar cases. Valuable information can be found there on on various criminal modus operandi, places where bodies are hidden, techniques used to get rid of a body. He relates that on one occasion, thanks to the data, he was able to deduce the maximum distance a body might be found in relation to where the crime had been committed.

The figures quoted in the report he hands over give us the shivers. The crimes, including those of a sexual nature, are committed by the parents in 84% of cases; 96% are perpetrated by friends and relatives. In only 4% of them is the murderer or abductor a total stranger to the victim. In this roundabout way, Mark Harrison points out that the guilty party may be a person close to Madeleine, and even her own parents. From now on, we have to explore this track, especially as the others have proved fruitless.

Of course, if Mark Harrison (tentatively) concluded that if Madeleine is dead, her remains were most likely thrown in the sea (he did!) then he certainly never re-directed the enquiry to look for a body 'hidden' somewhere close to apartment 5a.

Homicide Disposal Datasets

A limited search has been conducted of datasets that contain body disposal
data in homicide cases (CATCHEM, SCAS, FBI). Although this search was
limited due to the time constraints placed on this reports delivery an inference
can be gained from both the data sets and the authors own case work
experience. I have also consulted with NPIA and FBI colleagues to benefit
from their experiences.
The conclusion inferred is that beach burial is extremely rare. This should not
surprise us as to dig on a beach is a high risk activity requiring expending time
and energy when a more 'least effort" disposal is readily available, that is
directly into the sea. Of those limited cases that were found to be a beach
disposal the overwhelming majority were surface depositions with only one
recorded concealment using rocks on top of a 2 year old child (CATCHEM
Database)

To rule out his own, earlier, and strictly hypothetical, observation that large, free-standing rocks on the beach could have been used to conceal the body of a small child.

Amaral's account of how the 'inspection' at the gym came about:

At 8pm, Tavares de Almeida calls me to let me know that Mark Harrison requires another place because this one is not sufficiently clean.
– How do I find a place at this kind of time?
– Sort it out!
Julio Barroso offers us the new sports hall in Lagos which, finally, meets the required standards. The objects are once again laid out on the ground and the dogs can start. Eddie alerts us to a strong cadaver odour on some of Kate’s clothes, but the CSI dog doesn’t detect the slightest trace of blood.

All of which, maybe, explains why Mark Harrison's sole reference to either that 'inspection' or the one before it at the McCanns' rented villa (where Madeleine never lived!) was this. (More in an edit)

In other circumstances, if the implications of taint weren't so appalling, Amaral's account of how the 'inspection' at the gym came about would be a hoot.

Here it is, again, from The Book of Many Lies:

Eddie goes immediately to the lounge. He comes to a stop in front of a wicker armchair on which is lying Madeleine's small pink soft toy, which Kate was never without in the early days of the investigation. Nowadays, she wears a rosary and a green ribbon around her neck. Eddie barks to let us know that he has detected an odour: the soft toy has been in contact with a body.

The soft toy and all the clothes from the house are placed into boxes specially made to preserve evidence. These objects are then conveyed to the decontaminated premises. They are placed on the ground, a good distance apart for the dogs to examine.

Whilst it is true that Amaral's boss, Encarancio, did instruct Mark Harrison to conduct an inspection in the McCanns' rented villa, where Madeleine never lived, Mark Harrison's sole reference to 'inspection' at the gym, to re-examine clothing earlier ignored in the McCanns' rented villa, was this:

On 02-08-07 the PJ conducted a search warrant at a villa in Praia da Luz currently occupied by the McCann family.

Later the same day PJ officers conducted a screening procedure involving items removed from the McCann’s villa.

On 03-08-07 PJ and GNR officers were given instruction based on translated extracts from NPIA doctrine on search management and procedures. This focused on search procedures relating to buildings and vehicles.

Telling that Mark Harrison waited until after both 'inspections' at villa and gym to offer PJ officers translated instructions on how to conduct canine inspections in buildings and vehicles.
