BRAUNSCHWEIG Christian B. was registered in Braunschweig and is said to have killed Maddie McCann. Now one of the most important witnesses about him and the crime unpacks.

It's one of the biggest, or at least one of the longest, criminal cases. We are talking about the Maddie McCann case , which also has a connection to Braunschweig. And not insignificant. More than 16 years ago, on May 3, 2007 to be precise, Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family's apartment in a holiday resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal . Although the girl was wanted internationally, the case was never solved. Now there is a new development. But at least statements that make you sit up and take notice.

Since June 2020, the German Christian B. has been suspected of having kidnapped the girl. The public prosecutor's office in Braunschweig has brought charges against Christian B. for five other sexual offenses - three counts of rape and two counts of child abuse. The district court of Braunschweig then issued an arrest warrant . However, it had to withdraw this in 2023 because the court lacked jurisdiction .

Christian B. was reported in Braunschweig: why the Maddie case affects the lion city
Now Helge B. , an important witness in the Maddie McCann case, spoke in an interview with the Bild newspaper. The Federal Criminal Police Office has been shielding Christian B.'s ex-companion for years and hiding him in various places in Europe. In the picture interview, the 52-year-old reveals, among other things, why he also thinks Christian B. is the kidnapper of little Maddie. As Helge B. reports, he and Christian B. (46) met in Portugal in front of a pub when Helge B. had a breakdown. The two met again and again. At some point, however, he found out that Christian B. was in custody.

In the Maddie McCann case, there were various searches. Among other things, a search operation requested by the BKA not far from a Portuguese reservoir.

According to Helge B.'s statements in an interview with the Bild newspaper, Christian B. accidentally confessed to the crime . This happened in 2008. Christian B. explained to him that he was no longer traveling to Portugal. According to Christian B., according to Helge B., there were too many police checks for him . Helge B. then turned to Maddie McCann , whereupon Christian B. said: "'She didn't scream.' I immediately checked what he said. I thought: He knows that. But he also checked that I understood and then ran away that night. At 3 or 4 a.m. he left a crowded festival with his mobile home ,” Helge B. tells the Bild newspaper.

Maddie McCann case: why the witness is now unpacking about Christian B
As Helge B. further reports, he had already called Scotland Yard on the Maddie hotline in 2008. But he was not heard there. In 2017, when Helge B. was in custody in Greece, he contacted Scotland Yard again about the Maddie McCann case, in which there were various searches . This time with success: the officials listened to him at a meeting.

Helge B. explains to the newspaper why he is now unpacking in conversation with the Bild newspaper about Christian B. and the Maddie McCann case : “It all has to come to an end. So many lies are being spread about me and there is nothing I can do about it. I'm helpless. I tried to do something after all!” According to Helge B., he would wish that “there would finally be peace. It is clear to me that Maddie is no longer alive. As sad as that may be – it would be better if you found her body. ”He was worried that Christian B. would get away with it, Helge B. told the Bild newspaper.

Witness has his own theory about Maddie's disappearance
In 2017, about ten years after Maddie's disappearance, he called Scotland Yard again - this time with consequences. First he met two officials in Athens, then gave his testimony in London . In 2018, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reported because they needed his statement regarding the rape of the elderly lady he had seen on Christian B.'s videos. A year later he finally saw the main suspect in the Maddie case in court.

He has his own theory about Maddie's disappearance. "My theory is that he was planning a burglary . That it went wrong and he found the kids in the apartment. And then he took Maddie with him. It probably wasn't planned at all.” In any case, he trusts him to have kidnapped the girl. "I don't know if he killed her in the end."

Witness: Ever since he tipped off investigators about Maddie, 'I've been on the run'
Helge B also talks about the reason why he is now making this story public. “It all has to come to an end. So many lies are being spread about me and there is nothing I can do about it. I'm helpless." He doesn't want the reward for information about Maddie's disappearance, he says it should be donated.

He lived and worked in Corsica until reporters showed up at his door. Then the "gauntlet" started, his past caught up with him, says the 52-year-old. "The BKA has reported: You have to go there until grass has grown over the matter. Since then I've been on the run. It's no fun. I long for my old life back, but that is no longer possible.”

Appeal to Christian B.: "I hope you don't get away with it"
He wishes there was finally peace, says Helge B. "It's clear to me that Maddie is no longer alive. As sad as that is, it would be better if her body was found. I'm worried that Christian B. will get away with it."

He also has a message for the prime suspect: "Christian, I hope you don't get away with this story. With what you did You deny these videos exist. These videos existed. Unfortunately they are missing. But I saw her."
